Harborside: Who Got Fired?

Just a quick update.... and a perfect example of why you need a union at Harborside.

We've heard from one of your colleagues who just got fired.

It seems there was a sales idea sent out in an e-mail— your coworker hit "reply all" and made a few suggestions— someone further up the food chain liked some of the ideas and folded them into the strategy— but her immediate boss apparently took offense to her moment in the limelight and fired her. The boss called it "insubordination."

But it really doesn't make any difference what they call it. She— and you— and everyone at Harborside— are "at will employees." You can be fired at any time and for any reason— or for no reason at all.

If you're represented by IAPE, (unless you pull a gun on someone at work, deal drugs out of your desk, steal or take a swing at the boss) you can't be fired without "due cause" and all the guarantees of progressive discipline outlined in the contract.

Management might have a different spin on this particular case— and that's to be expected. But with a union your boss would have to prove it— and you'd have a union rep to protect your rights every step of the way.

You need a union. You need to sign a Union Card.
