Signal is a secure messaging app available on Android, iOS and PC (Windows/Apple/Linux). If you would like to contact IAPE securely, you can do so by downloading the app or installing it on your device, creating a username, and messaging IAPE_SIGNAL_CONTACT.17 (you must include the final dot 17 as part of the username).

Step-by-Step

Download the Signal app on your phone, or install onto your computer — do not install on company devices like a work laptop or company phone. Additionally, we recommend you do not install this on your personal phone if you use it for work as well, i.e. if your personal phone is connected to Dow Jones’ company Slack. Signal requires your phone number, but just for setup. Whether you want to share your number is up to you.

In the app, tap your initials in the top-left corner, then tap your details at the top of the screen. On the next screen, click the @ sign, and type in a username you want to use. Signal will attach a period and a number after your selected username — this is part of your username and must be included when sharing it.

To message IAPE, tap the pen icon on the right side of the Signal home screen. Tap “Find By Username” and type in IAPE_SIGNAL_CONTACT.17. Tap the arrow at the bottom of the screen. Now type your message and tap send.

Once you connect with an IAPE rep, Signal will change your user name to the first and last name you set in the profile. If you wish to remain anonymous, set these to something other than your name.

You can use a more detailed breakdown on these instructions on Signal’s website here: https://signal.org/blog/phone-number-privacy-usernames/

Why Signal?

IAPE recognizes that reporting sensitive issues, such as a negative interaction with a manager, is difficult, and Signal provides added security and, if you want, anonymity. How much, or little, information you want to share with IAPE is up to you.

That said, IAPE cannot act on anonymous information alone, so please bear that in mind if you do not wish to be identified.
